Principles of Acne

Clogged Pores
Acne formation begins with clogged pores (also known as hair follicles). Hair follicles contain sebaceous glands, and these glands secrete oil (sebum) to lubricate and protect the skin.
Bacterial Infection.
When a pore is clogged, bacteria on the surface of the skin, such as Propionibacterium acnes, can colonize the pore. These bacteria break down sebum and produce a number of irritants that cause inflammation and infection of the skin around the hair follicle. The infected pores become red and swollen and form pustules, which is commonly referred to as pimples or acne.
Inflammatory Response.
Bacterial infections and clogged pores trigger the body's immune response. White blood cells move into the infected area to fight the bacteria, a process that creates inflammation and leads to redness, swelling, pain and warmth of the skin.
